For festival headliners Umphrey’s McGee, Moontower will mark its first Lexington show since a performance at Buster’s in January 2013. That’s a stark contrast from Nashville’s Blackfoot Gypsies, who played at The Burl in February and the Moonshiner’s Ball in nearby Irvine last month. The Gypsies will make another stop in Lexington prior to their Moontower set on July 22 to help celebrate The Burl’s one-year anniversary.
The final of the new additions, Daisy Helmuth, is a locally-bred talent following in the footsteps of her father Otto, a veteran of Lexington’s music scene and bands such as The Blueberries and Slo-Fi. Helmuth, a 16 year-old singer-songwriter steeped in folk and rock influences, performs on guitar, keys and organs.
Helmuth’s Moontower set will be one of the first with her new project People Planet, which is comprised of drummer Jack Quinn, brother of Johnny Conqueroo’s Wils Quinn and son of Ten Foot Pole and Rebel Without a Cause’s Bill Quinn; lead guitarist Charlie Overman; bassist Madeline Farrar and cellist Logan Florence. Helmuth used to perform as a solo artist, but says she’s beginning to branch out and collaborate more with others.
Never miss a local story.
“My initial response was shock. I've been to Moontower and I love the music festival environment,” Helmuth said. “I've always wanted to participate so it was exciting to realize that someone wanted me and my band to play.”

Prior to Moontower, Helmuth, who released her self-titled debut EP last November, has shows at Broomwagon Coffee + Bikes at noon on June 17 and First Friday Berea on July 7 with Grits & Soul and Ben Sollee.
New artist additions join an already star-studded lineup that includes Benjamin Booker, JJ Grey & Mofro, Cherub, Todd Snider & Great American Taxi, The Record Company, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Tyler Childers, Elise Davis, Vita & The Woolf, Warren Byrom & The Fabled Canelands and the Debraun Thomas Trio.
West Sixth Brewing and Moontower are teaming up on June 17 for a Summer Solstice party at the brewery’s Lexington campus featuring music from Small Batch and Debraun Thomas Trio and food from Smithtown Seafood and Sav’s Chill. Festival tickets will be available for purchase on-site, coupled with special beer perks.
According to Kaelyn Query, President of LexEffect, the organizational arm of Moontower, plans are still being ironed out for a festival after-party at The Burl, with details coming as soon as they’re finalized.
