The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera has selected Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra conductor Kayoko Dan as director, according to the symphony officials.
Dan, 33, said she will leave her position in the Bluegrass to take the Chattanooga job. She has directed the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra since April 2009.
Dan will succeed Robert Bernhardt as the eighth leader of the Chattanooga symphony. She is the first woman and the youngest person to earn the position of music director.
"We think she's a superstar in the making," the orchestra's Executive Director Molly Sasse said.

In 2008, Dan was a finalist when the Lexington Philharmonic was looking for a conductor.
