The king of contemporary country is heading back to Lexington for his first concerts here since 1998. Garth Brooks has been confirmed for two Rupp Arena performances Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Fellow country star and Brooks' wife Trisha Yearwood will open both shows.
The performances are part of Brooks' first extensive tour following a 2001 "retirement." His record sales, however, remain huge. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified Brooks as the top selling solo artist of any genre with sales of over 134 million albums.
The singer's 2013 boxed album, Blame It All on My Roots, is his 13th recording to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard country charts and the ninth to top the all-genre Billboard 200 in its first week of release.
Brooks' newest single, released two weeks ago, is People Loving People. That single debuted at No. 19 on Billboard's country airplay chart, and his new album is slated for release on Nov. 28, that crazy shopping day known as Black Friday.
Never miss a local story.
Brooks' last Rupp Arena dates were three consecutive sold-out nights in May 1998, and he then turned around and sold out four nights in Louisville's Freedom Hall. In 1993, he became the first act to sell out two consecutive nights at Rupp. His Lexington debut was in 1991, when he was actually billed as an opener for The Judds, who were then believed to be playing their last concert.
That concert set a record for country concert attendance in Rupp, meaning Brooks has never left an unsold ticket in Lexington.
Rupp has already had two sold-out country concerts this year: Jason Aldean's show Saturday and Luke Bryan's show in February. Will Brooks make it three and four?
