They set their stories to music
Sparky and Rhonda Rucker have been praised by Appalachian and folk music luminaries Pete Seeger and Loyal Jones of Berea College for their musicianship and entertaining performances. The duo bring their show of music and storytelling to Lexington for two performances Friday: at noon as part of the Appalachia in the Bluegrass Series, presented in the Niles Gallery at the University of Kentucky's Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library (free, www.finearts.uky.edu/music/niles/appalachian), and at 7 p.m. in The Listening Room at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, 180 East Maxwell Street ($10, Maxpres.org).
Czech out the UK Symphony
The University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra's season-opening concert is an all-Czech affair, from the music to the guest conductor. A Bohemian Celebration will feature music by Antonin Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana conducted by UKSO conductor John Nardolillo and the orchestra's new assistant conductor Jan Pellant. Pellant is a native of the Czech Republic who is now a doctoral student in conducting at the UK School of Music. He has conducted many orchestras including the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. at the Singletary Center for the Arts, 405 Rose Street. Admission is free.

This guy sings funny
The songwriter and comic Heywood Banks brings his act to Comedy Off Broadway at The Mall at Lexington Green. Show times are 7:15 and 9:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $18 and $20. Comedyoffbroadway.com.
Fall-festival food is big in Kentucky
Fall festivals around the state will serve up some tasty treats. Events include the World Chicken Festival in London, frying up chicken in the world's largest skillet. The Casey County Apple Festival in Liberty features a giant apple pie. And at the 24th annual Heritage Festival at Saint Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church in Lexinghton, ethnic foods of Eastern Europe and the Middle East will be offered.
