Taryn Syck, 15, a sophomore at Pike County Central High School, won Kentucky’s 2014 Poetry Out Loud competition and will represent the state at the national finals April 29 and 30 in Washington, D.C.
Syck was one of 14 competitors in the contest that was judged by Kentucky poet laureate Frank X Walker, former Kentucky poet laureate Maureen Morehead, and writers Normandi Ellis and Leatha Kendrick.
Boyd County High School junior Gabrielle Thompson was the first runner-up. She will receive a $100 cash prize and $200 for her school to buy library books.
As the winner, Syck will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip for her and her chaperone to the finals in Washington. Pike County Central will also receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books for its library.
The Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest will award $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes to winners and top finalists.
