Rejoice, sauce fans: McDonald’s is bringing back the Szechuan sauce ... and it won’t run out this time. At least not right away.
This time, there will be 20 million packets, not just 10 per store, as happened in October when the hamburger chain tried to capitalize on the resurgence in interest from fans of the “Rick and Morty Show” on Adult Swim.
The super-limited supply caused riots, with angry fans across the country demanding Szechuan sauce.
Beginning at lunchtime on Monday, it’s back on the menu everywhere, including in Lexington. Szechuan sauce will be available while supplies last with a “qualifying purchase” such as McNuggets or chicken tenders. Maybe fries. But not sundaes. Because ewww.
“We know that fans across the Bluegrass have been waiting patiently, and we’re proud to bring a limited supply of Szechuan sauce back to all of our restaurants to enjoy with a qualifying purchase, including our delicious buttermilk crispy tenders,” said Denise Long, McDonald’s owner/operator in the Lexington area.
She promises that each restaurant will have “hundreds of packets” so the odds are good you can get some this time.
Not like Oct. 7, when thousands of fans went home hungry. And angry. That’s a bad public relations combination.
“Last October, we truly meant well when we brought back a super-limited batch of Szechuan Sauce, but it quickly became apparent we did not make enough to meet the expectations of our fans,” the company said.
So they had a podcast produced to answer all the questions. Find “The Sauce” in iTunes and Google Play Music. Studio@Gizmodo and Onion Labs, at the behest of McDonald’s, produced “The Sauce,” a look into the saga of the sauce.
The three-part series, hosted by Catherine LeClair, wraps everything from “the show” (which apparently they didn’t get the rights to mention because “Rick and Morty” isn’t named) to the pop culture pile-on.
