Conversion lifts Lafayette over Scott Co. in OT

Lafayette snaps Cardinals' 5-game win streak

- mmaloney@herald-leader.com

GEORGETOWN — Eric Shaw ran in for a two-point conversion Friday, lifting Lafayette to a 22-21 overtime victory and spoiling Scott County's Senior Night at Toyota Stadium.

Rob Sayre, coach of the Generals, said he needed some time to consider going for the two points.

"But my kids kept going 'Coach, we've got nothing to lose. Let's go, Coach, and we'll get it,' " Sayre said. "In those situations, you go to the guy who's gotten you here all year — put the ball in the hands of your best player and see what they can do."

The Generals (6-4, 2-1 district) have a week off before moving on to district playoffs as a No. 3 seed.

Scott County (7-2, 2-1) had a five-game winning streak snapped.

Tied at 14 through regulation, Scott County was first to go in overtime.

The Cardinals conquered the 10 yards in three plays, the score coming on a 4-yard run by Josh Walls. Jay Willmott kicked the PAT.

After one play lost a yard, Lafayette countered with an 11-yard pass from Brett Durbin to Nick Fergerson, the same combination that clicked for the tying touchdown in regulation.

Scott County then took a timeout, giving Sayre more time to consider his options.

Shaw, an all-purpose back, took the snap in the Wildcat formation.

"We ran an 18 sweep where I just keep it around the corner," Shaw said. "Our receivers blocked for me and I just scored a 'touchdown,' ran it through them."

Shaw squeezed in the right corner of the end zone.

"Good call by them. Good run by Shaw. Credit to them," said Jim McKee, Scott County's coach. "They outplayed us in all three phases of the game and outcoached us."

Shaw led Lafayette with 97 rushing yards on 10 carries, and with 101/2 tackles.

Lafayette led 7-0 through a turnover-filled half.

Scott County tied less than a minute into the second half.

Cody Campbell recovered a Lafayette high snap at the Generals' 5-yard line.

Brooks Barber ran for 3 yards, then scored from the 2.

Later in the third quarter, Marcus Hill put the Cardinals ahead with a 36-yard touchdown run. Hill finished with 130 yards on 17 carries.

Lafayette tied with 2:01 left in the quarter on a 21-yard pass from Durbin to Fergerson.

Scott County went for the win on the final play of regulation. But Willmott's 49-yard field-goal try on a muddied turf never had a chance.

Earlier, the Generals' Andy Hampton recovered a fumbled pitch to end Scott County's opening drive.

Lafayette then zipped 61 yards in three plays.

Matt Britt found Marlon Johnson for a 28-yard pass completion.

David Kenner spun out of a tackle near the line of scrimmage and ran 17 yards.

Finally, Britt lobbed a screen pass to Shaw, who took the ball down the Lafayette sideline for a 16-yard scoring play with 6:32 left in the first quarter.

Scott County, which had eight turnovers through eight games, lost the ball three times in the half and once more in the second half. But the Cardinals also blocked a punt and a field-goal attempt.
