Senior center Jorge Gonzalez has been suspended for one game for a violation of team rules and will miss Kentucky's football season opener with Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 5.
Coach Rich Brooks said junior Marcus Davis and redshirt freshman Matt Smith would compete for the starting job in the Miami game.
Also, sophomore receiver Aaron Boyd has been suspended from football activity for one week for a violation of team rules.
Boyd was trying to get in the mix of what figures to be a logjam at wide receiver.
Sophomore Randall Cobb and junior-college transfer Chris Matthews have both been impressive, and Brooks also listed sophomore Gene McCaskill, junior Kyrus Lanxter, freshman LaRod King, redshirt freshman E.J. Fields and sophomore Matt Roark as doing good things in the first week of practice.
Brooks said sophomore Eric Adeyemi, who played as a true freshman, is battling just to be in the rotation.
"You talk about competition, that position's got a lot of it," Brooks said. "And some of the guys that played last year may not be playing much this year."
Evans returns to practice
Defensive end DeQuin Evans returned to practice Monday after sitting out a couple of days with a hamstring pull.
Brooks said the 6-foot-3, 260-pounder was impressive in limited reps.
"There isn't any question he can bring a lot to the table," Brooks said. "We've just got to get him back to being completely 100 percent.
"He's still got some tightness (in the hamstring), but it hasn't gotten worse, and he actually took some reps in the scrimmage."
Smith MRI negative
The MRI on senior running back Alfonso Smith's foot came back negative, Brooks said.
A special orthotic shoe has been ordered for Smith, and if it arrives by Wednesday, Smith figures to return to practice.
Lanefski injures knee
Offensive lineman Jake Lanefski has suffered torn cartilage in his knee and probably need surgery that could sideline him two to three weeks, Brooks said.
Lanefski started the final four games at right guard last season but had been working on the second team behind Christian Johnson at left guard and Stuart Hines at right guard.
