Ex-Cat Witten qualifies for U.S. Open

Former University of Kentucky All-American Jesse Witten qualified for the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Austria’s Alexander Peya. He will face 29th seed Igor Andreev of Russia in the first round, which will be played Monday and Tuesday.

Witten, a Naples, Fla., resident, is ranked No. 270 in the world. In 2006, he qualified for the U.S. Open and lost to Paul Goldstein in the first round of the main draw. His career-high ranking came in October of 2006 when he reached No. 171.

Witten reached the finals of the NCAA Championships as a sophomore in 2002 and was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference singles selection all four years at Kentucky. He was also the school's first five-time All-American (four singles, one doubles).
