Memphis commitments prepared to reopen recruitment

It hasn't been all fun and sun in Miami for two Memphis recruits at the McDonald's All-American game this week.

DeMarcus Cousins and Xavier Henry, both ranked among the top five high school players in the country, said they've been swamped with text messages and calls about the Coach John Calipari situation.

"At first I didn't believe it," Xavier Henry told Miami media this morning. "People were texting me."

Henry, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of Oklahoma City, said he didn't really believe it until he saw it all over ESPN on Monday night.

Both Cousins and Henry have told the news media that they would reopen their recruitment process if Calipari heads to Kentucky.

"I'm trying to stay focused right now and have fun," Cousins told the Miami Herald. "When I get back home, it's time to get back down to business."

Henry said he had a clause in his letter of intent that allows him to break his deal with Memphis if Calipari left, but he did not say he would be following the coach to Kentucky.

Henry instead said he would "reopen my recruitment and consider everybody; reopen it from the beginning."

Before signing with Memphis, Henry said he took only two official visits and that he'd like to take some more.

"It's just another bump in the road," Henry said of the situation.

Cousins also was non-committal about his commitment to Memphis.

When asked if he would consider Kentucky, the 6-foot-9 power forward considered one of the nation's top prospects, told the Miami Herald he wouldn't rule it out.

"Yeah, but I'm also opening it all the way back up," Cousins said of his recruitment process, adding that he'd also consider Kansas State and Washington as other options.

Junior-college players and Memphis signees, Darnell Dodson and Will Coleman declined to comment on the Calipari situation through their Miami Dade Community College Coach on Tuesday night.

"I will handle the bulk of this for them," Coach Matt Eisele said via e-mail. I'm "just trying to make sure they are protected. They are overwhelmed right now."

Dodson is a 6-7 small forward and Coleman is a 6-9 power forward.
