UK gets time to respond to Gillispie
Attorneys for the University of Kentucky and its former basketball coach, Billy Clyde Gillispie, have jointly asked a federal court in Dallas for more time to allow UK to respond to Gillispie's lawsuit.
Gillispie sued the UK Athletics Association last month alleging breach of contract and fraud after being fired in March. He claims the university owes him at least $6 million for firing him two years into a seven-year agreement.
Since Gillispie's dismissal, UK officials have argued that the coach never signed a formal contract and was operating under a year-by-year memorandum of understanding.
The university's lawyers had been scheduled to respond to Gillispie's lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas by Monday.
Lawyers on both sides agreed to push the deadline to June 26, according to a joint motion filed in Dallas late Thursday.
UK has filed its own suit against Gillispie in Franklin Circuit Court in Kentucky, which hinted the university would argue that federal court in Dallas is not the appropriate venue for the case.
