Notes: Seiber goes long to set UK scoring record

Not only did senior place-kicker Lones Seiber break the Kentucky career scoring record Saturday, but he did it in style.

Seiber set the record on a career-long 49-yard field goal during the first quarter, then nailed another 49-yarder on the final play of the period.

Seiber now has 254 career points, eight ahead of Joey Worley, who played at Kentucky from 1984-87.

Seiber said the fact that he broke the record on a long field goal instead of an extra point made it even more special.

"That was a career long for me, so I was pretty stoked about it," Seiber said.

Seiber has battled inconsistency throughout his career but hopes Saturday's performance can have a carryover effect for the rest of the season.

"Hitting that first one gave me a boost of confidence," Seiber said. "It also helps my team have confidence in me that kicking a field goal isn't so bad."

UK had a solid all-around special teams effort during Saturday's 38-20 loss to Alabama, with the exception of two plays: a 60-yard return by Javier Arenas on the opening kickoff, and a 17-yard gain by holder P.J. Fitzgerald on a fake field goal late in the fourth quarter.

But Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks was pleased overall with the UK kicking game.

Seiber had a career day, and the Cats established early field position thanks to the punting of Ryan Tydlacka.

Redshirt freshman kicker Craig McIntosh, a Lexington Christian graduate, made his debut with four kickoffs for a 63.2 yards-per-kick average.

"Other than those two plays, I thought our kicking game really gave us an advantage," Brooks said.

McClain dominates

Alabama junior linebacker Rolando McClain played like an All-American against the Cats, racking up a game-high 12 tackles, forcing a Derrick Locke fumble that was returned for a touchdown, intercepting one Mike Hartline pass and tipping another that led to a pick.

"Most guys don't have linebackers who are 258 (pounds) and run like that," Brooks said. "He's a big-time player. I know they took a blow when they lost (injured linebacker Dont'a) Hightower, but it looks like (McClain) picked up the slack for them. He's a man-child out there, a great football player. He'll be playing on Sundays along with some of those guys around him."

UK's standout middle linebacker, Micah Johnson, tied with Danny Trevathan for the team lead with 10 tackles.

Injury update

The Wildcats suffered several bumps and bruises against the Crimson Tide.

Senior cornerback Trevard Lindley left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. Brooks said the initial X-rays showed no breaks, but he'd know more about the extent of the injury on Sunday.

Senior running back Alfonso Smith played the second half with a splint over his sprained right hand, which forced him to carry the ball with his left hand and limited his pass-catching ability.

Quarterback Mike Hartline suffered a bruised knee, running back Derrick Locke played through a thigh bruise and groin injury, linebacker Micah Johnson reinjured a finger that he hurt last week against Florida, and tight end Ross Bogue suffered a thumb injury that limited him mostly to special teams.
