The Kentucky News Review will be taking a few days off, starting Wednesday. It will return Monday, Oct. 19.
- Stateline.org has a report on sources of revenue for state governments. States that rely too heavily on one tax are vulnerable to revenue fluctuations that can be especially harmful during recessions, according to Stateline.org. Kentucky relies most heavily on individual state income tax, then, in descending order: general sales tax, property tax, selective sales tax, corporate income tax and finally, license fees. The analysis was done by Tax Foundation.
- The Kentucky Book Fair will be held Nov. 7, at the Frankfort Convention Center, 405 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY. Hours are 9 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.The list of authors attending is now available.
- The Kentucky Dept. of Travel has a list of places around the state to get creeped-out for Halloween. The locations include Old Louisville, Bardstown, Fort Harrod State Park and the Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville.
- Kentucky Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday features Black Males Working, a collaborative program of First Bracktown Inc. and the Fayette County schools on his blog. The program is an outreach of First Baptist Bracktown and began in 2005 to address the needs of African-American males at Leestown Middle School. Since that time, the program has grown to serve more than 140 students from 11 middle schools and five high schools. The Herald-Leader reported on the group in 2007.
- The Washington Post is covering the Department of Energy's biennial Solar Decathlon. The twenty solar homes are now on display at the National Mall. The University of Kentucky is one of the competing teams. The Herald-Leader reported on UK's entry.
