- The Akron Beacon Journal travel section profiles the Blue Heron coal camp in Stearns, Ky. The park, which is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, includes 13 open-sided structures. The structures are based on buildings that were once used at the camp. They have audio tap recordings of oral histories and old photographs from former workers and residents.
- USA Today reports on the electric car-battery industry. Kentucky was one of the states that applied for federal funds to develop an advanced car battery plant, but was denied in August 2009.
- Ohio is unwilling to share an invasive bug species with Kentucky. The woolly adelgid is now showing up in parts of Ohio, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The beetle poses a huge threat to American hardwood trees and is on the feds' most-wanted list. The bugs were found in Kentucky in 2006 in hemlocks in Harlan County.
