An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured during a birthday party in Nicholas County Saturday after his father accidently fired a shotgun, a sheriff's deputy said.
The boy, whose name was not released, was with relatives on Salt Well Road in Nicholas County, celebrating a young girl's birthday.
During the party, relatives gathered to shoot clay targets, sheriff's deputy Ben Buckler Sr. said. The boy's father, also not named by Buckler, had a 12-gauge, single-shot shotgun that malfunctioned. The boy was shot and had injuries to his chest and arm, Buckler said.
He was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital where he was in stable condition Saturday night, Buckler said.
No charges are expected to be filed. Buckler said evidence and witness reports suggest that this was an accidental shooting.
