Mindful of the ties between music and academic achievement, Letcher County Schools Superintendent Anna Craft worried that fewer students in the area were studying piano.
To help with a new program, nearly 200 Whitesburg High alumni donated more than $38,000 for a Steinway "B" concert grand piano that was delivered Wednesday to Letcher County Central High School.
Letcher County Central, a consolidated school, opened in 2005 after Whitesburg High School closed.
James Crase of Somerset, a member of the WHS Alumni Committee, said members are now raising money to fund keyboards for piano training labs at Letcher County's elementary schools.
"We don't know how many Mozarts or professional pianists have gone by the wayside in the past century because their talents were not cultivated in the early years," Crase said.
