State troopers shot and killed a man in Perry County early Friday, said Trooper Tony Watts, a spokesman for the Hazard post.
Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle just after midnight, Watts said. At 3:27 a.m., troopers Jackie Pickrell and Jennifer Sandlin stopped the vehicle on Scuddy Hollow Road.
Never miss a local story.
A fight began between the driver, identified as Nathan Hurt, 32, of Vicco, and the officers. Hurt was shot during the altercation, Watts said, and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Perry County coroner's office. Watts said he could not say whether Hurt was armed, or whether one or both officers shot him.
"We haven't got that far in the investigation yet," Watts said. "All I know is there were two troopers involved."
Such details "will be part of the investigation and won't be revealed until it is completed and ready for the grand jury," he said.
Both officers were treated for minor injuries at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital. Both have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
