A husband and wife have been charged with embezzling more than $50,000 from a Lexington day-care.
Larry M. Chowning III, 43, and Teresa Lynn Chowning, 40, face a combined 116 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, according to a Fayette County grand jury indictment released Tuesday.
Teresa Chowning, who for five years was the secretary at the Hallis School, and her husband are accused of forging checks totaling $51,207.56 from mid-July until mid-December of 2008. As secretary, Teresa Chowning handled all of the school's accounts.
The school discovered the theft in late December and pressed charges soon after, a school administrator said.
Teresa Chowning was being held at the Fayette jail on a $132,000 full-cash bond. Her husband was being held on a $248,000 full-cash bond.
The Chownings will be arraigned Thursday in Fayette Circuit Court.
