A Lincoln County man died in an accident involving a hay baler Tuesday evening.
Glenn Day, 56, was baling hay in the Ottenheim community with a round baler when the equipment became clogged, said Lincoln County Coroner Bill Demrow.
Day, who was working alone, opened a hinged door to the inner workings of the machine and was using a pocket knife to loosen hay that was clogging it, Demrow said. Day had his back to the door and did not see it slowly closing. The door finally closed on Day, and its weight suffocated him, Demrow said.
"There is a lock, one simple lever, that locks the door where it cannot come down," he said. Day had not used it.
When Day did not return from the field when he should have, a fellow farm worker went to the scene and found him. Day was pronounced dead at the scene about 6:30 p.m.
