Two men who police say were involved in the shooting of an officer were indicted this week by a Fayette County grand jury.
Marc Anthony Laquinn Buchanan, 26, pleaded not guilty in Fayette Circuit Court on Thursday to charges of criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault, fleeing and evading police and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He has been scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on July 2.
Jesse Lewis Mayberry, 26, who has been charged with fleeing and evading police and first-degree possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) is scheduled for an arraignment on June 19.
Police say the shooting occurred after Officer Nicholas Whitcomb approached two men who he said might have broken into a car and stolen a stereo. Buchanan and Mayberry were in a Dodge Intrepid that was backed into a parking space, court documents said.
Buchanan got out of the car to talk, then he ducked into the car and came back out and ran through a parking lot to Winburn Drive. Whitcomb and another officer chased Buchanan, who turned around and fired at the officers and continued to run, court documents said. A bullet went into Whitcomb's shoulder, traveled across his back and lodged into the other shoulder.
Buchanan and Mayberry, who were indicted on Tuesday, are being held at the Fayette County jail.
