Flash flooding damaged an estimated 25 to 40 homes and at least one church in Perry County early Monday, the county's director of emergency management said.
Firefighters had to wade into high water to help some residents escape. No one was injured in the flooding, although several firefighters had to get tetanus shots after being exposed to the water, said John Epperson, the emergency director.
One two-story home was knocked off its foundation, but residents will be able to return to most of the homes after cleanup, Epperson said.
The flood waters rose about 5:30 a.m., getting into basements and first levels of homes. The flooding was concentrated in the communities of Bulan and Hardburly, Epperson said.
