A Whitley County teenager is in critical condition after his 15-year-old friend accidentally shot him Wednesday, Kentucky State Police say.
The teenagers have not been identified.
The two boys had been staying Tuesday and Wednesday in a camper behind the 14-year-old victim's house at 400 Concord Church Road in the community of Canadatown. The teenagers were "playing with a loaded gun," that appears to have belonged to the victim's father when the 15-year-old shot the 14-year-old once in the lower abdomen, Lt. Chuck Davis, a detective with the Whitley County Sheriff's Office, said. The gun, a .357 Magnum, had two live rounds and one spent round in the cylinder when officers recovered it Wednesday.
The 15-year-old ran out of the camper and found the victim's father, James Roberts Sr., who was on the property, Davis said.
Emergency crews flew the victim by helicopter to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Authorities are investigating, but no charges have been filed, Davis said.
