Former Sheriff John Morgan owes several thousand dollars to Leslie County from 2005 and 2006, the state auditor of public accounts said in audits released Tuesday.
Also, Morgan employed his wife and sister in the sheriff's office in 2006, in violation of the county fiscal court's ethics policies, the audit said. They were paid a total of $52,553.
Parts of the audit are being referred to the state attorney general and parts to the Leslie County attorney, state Auditor Crit Luallen said in a press release.
Auditors found deficits of $3,738 in the 2006 fees account and $3,435 in the 2005 fees account. Some of the missing money was because of unpaid liabilities, and some was because of disallowed expenses by the sheriff. Auditors recommended the sheriff pay back the money out-of-pocket.
