A man taking a day off with his family near the Bruin State Park Boat Ramp on Grayson Lake drowned Tuesday in an apparent accident.
Juan Carlos Vasquez, 24, was swimming in the water off a closed beach, said Mark Marraccini, spokesman for state Fish and Wildlife Department.
Vasquez was in about 10 feet of water when he began to have trouble. Witnesses saw him and called for help. Four people tried to reach him but failed.
Kentucky State Police and Elliott County emergency medical personnel were called about 6 p.m. Fish and Wildlife recovered his body a few hours later.
Never miss a local story.
The Elliott County coroner declared Vasquez dead after his body was recovered.
The Grayson Lake beach didn't open in May for the summer season because maintenance on the beach and an access road hadn't been completed, said Gil Lawson, spokesman for state parks. The state couldn't immediately pay for the work, delaying its completion.
Signs announcing the closing have been posted, in English, but sometimes the signs have been stolen or torn down, Lawson said.
The beach access road is gated.
