NICHOLASVILLE — A worker fell in an underground quarry Tuesday morning and was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital to be treated for a possible broken right leg, Jessamine County Fire Chief Mike Rupard said.
Shortly before 8:30 a.m., firefighters were called to Lexington Quarry on Catnip Hill Road north of Nicholasville, Rupard said.
The quarry is nearly 700 feet deep, but Rupard was not sure at what depth the unidentified man fell. He did not know the circumstances but said the man fell 12 to 20 feet.
"We were on our way down to him, but they were packaging him up and heading out with him," Rupard said. "We joined in with them and brought him out. When we got to him, I think they said we were about 350 feet underground."
Employees at the quarry would not comment on the incident and referred questions to another number for The Allen Co. in Winchester, which owns the Nicholasville quarry. A woman there said the company was gathering information about the incident.
