A Powell County inmate escaped from custody Thursday night after he was taken to an Irvine hospital for treatment of an injury, Kentucky State Police said.
This is the second reported escape for Ethan Shane Newman, Trooper Michael Stotts of the Richmond post said.
Newman, 19, of Estill County was being held in the Powell County jail but was taken to Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital in Irvine, Stotts said. He did not know what kind of injury Newman had.
Police say Newman broke free from a deputy jailer on the hospital property. The escape was reported to state police shortly before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Newman had been charged with assaulting a police officer and other charges, Stotts said.
In June, Newman had escaped from the Estill County Courthouse in Irvine, where he was to appear for a hearing, Stotts said. He was captured a short time later.
Newman is a white male, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighs 175 pounds. At the time of his escape he was wearing orange pants, a white T-shirt and no shoes. He was not handcuffed, Stotts said.
"Being charged with an assault, I think he could be considered dangerous, absolutely," Stotts said.
Anyone with information about Newman's whereabouts should call local police or Kentucky State Police at (859) 623-2404.
