University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, who has been in Lexington less than seven months and has yet to coach a game, received a ceremonial key to the city from Mayor Jim Newberry on Wednesday.
Newberry, along with three urban county councilmen, presented Calipari with the key during an economic development meeting between city and UK officials.
"We will be grateful if you continue to put in good words for our community," Newberry said before handing Calipari the key box, which was roughly the size of a pencil case.
Calipari, who spoke in Louisville earlier Wednesday, said he's been touting the strides that UK is making and its importance to the state and Lexington.
"We're in this together," Calipari said. "Whatever happens good at this university is good for the city, and and whatever is good for the city is good for the university."
He praised the ongoing improvements to downtown, and quipped to Newberry: "You even made that guy put the grass down there" on the CentrePointe development's lot.
