AirTran Airways, a low-cost carrier, will bring nonstop service between Lexington and the popular vacation destinations of Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla., beginning Feb. 11.
"Low-cost carriers have a significant impact on the level of air service in a community," Brian Ellestad, deputy director of air service and community relations at Lexington's Blue Grass Airport, said Wednesday when the announcement was made. "AirTran Airways will definitely stimulate travel in Lexington and all of Central and Eastern Kentucky with its low fares and high quality service."
There will be one flight each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from Lexington to Fort Lauderdale, and one flight each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Lexington to Orlando.
One-way fares are expected to range from $99 to $259, plus applicable taxes and fees.
The AirTran flights will feature wireless Internet.
