At least seven people have been killed and at least 12 more wounded in a mass shooting at Fort Hood Army Base near Killeen, Lt. Gen. Russell Honore told CNN at 2:40 p.m.
Two suspects carrying M-16 rifles were reportedly involved in the shooting, Honore said. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another has been cornered, he said. It was unknown whether the victims are soldiers or civilians. Officials at the Pentagon said the wounded were taken to Darnell Army Hospital for treatement.
NBC affiliate KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post. The base was reportedly on lockdown. Two nearby school districts were also being locked down.
Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, Texas, and 60 miles northeast of Austin. The huge base is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.
