An early evening fire charred most everything in the living room of the house at 817 Press Avenue that Stephen Humphrey has rented for four years. But, to his relief, it spared his notes and class projects.
Humphrey, a University of Kentucky pharmacy student and the house's only occupant, wasn't home when the fire started at about 7 p.m.
The Lexington fire department was still investigating the cause Monday night but determined it was accidental and might have started with a living room lamp, Maj. Phil Buettner said.
At the fire's height, it engulfed about half of the two-story house, owned by Kim Baughman of Lexington. Much of the rest was smoke-damaged. Humphrey, who is in his last year of pharmacy school, arranged to stay with friends Monday night.
