A former Laurel County official and businessman died Wednesday in a fire at his home on Falls Road in London.
Henry Walden, who was in his 90s and confined to a wheelchair, was cooking in his kitchen when the fire began about 4 p.m., Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling said. Bowling said he thought the fire began in the kitchen.
Mr. Walden, a former longtime Laurel County clerk and car dealership owner, apparently died of smoke inhalation, the coroner said. Mr. Walden's body was found in the kitchen.
Mr. Walden's son, David Walden, with whom he lived, was in the garage at the residence when the fire started. David Walden tried to rescue his father but was hampered by heavy smoke, Bowling said.
Never miss a local story.
The home, in the London city limits, was a total loss, the coroner said.
In addition to David Walden, survivors include another son, Jim Walden; a daughter, Etta Greene; and several grandchildren.
Arrangements were pending at Bowling Funeral Home in London.
