A former state representative and current candidate for state Senate was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning after being hit by a car in Harlan County on Monday, hospital officials said.
Johnnie Turner, 62, of Harlan has been recovering since the accident, which happened about 8:30 a.m. Turner had pulled over to the shoulder of northbound U.S. 119 near Sukie Ridge Road in Baxter to scrape ice from his windshield, police said. As he stepped into the street to return to his truck, he was hit by a Ford Taurus driven by Franklin Saylor, 66, of Baxter.
Saylor was not injured. He has not been charged.
Turner, an attorney, suffered leg injuries and was taken to Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan. He could be released Wednesday, hospital officials said.
