Officials at the Lexington Public Library's Central Library were baffled Thursday after a glass panel shattered on the fifth floor, causing broken glass to litter the first floor.
Acting library director Martha White said employees in the library's administrative offices heard the glass hit the first floor around 12:30 p.m. No one was hurt by the broken glass, but the library's staff and customers cleared people out of the main lobby where most of the glass landed, White said. The main lobby and a portion of the fifth floor were roped off.
Structural engineers were called in to identify the cause, White said. As part of their research, the engineers are looking to see if anything similar has happened at other buildings in Lexington.
White said vandalism is not suspected.
