Multiple accidents on Interstate 64 in Shelby County have resulted in injuries to at least four people, and the interstate was shut down in both directions.
The series of accidents started about 7:25 a.m. Friday between the 32-mile and 35-mile markers of the interstate, a Shelby County emergency dispatcher said. Shortly after 9 a.m., one lane of traffic in each direction of the interstate had been reopened, but that could change as damaged vehicles were being removed, the dispatcher said.
The accidents occurred on both the east and the west sides of the interstate. The subsequent traffic tie-up resulted in several minor fender-benders extending into the Shelbyville city limits, Shelbyville police Maj. Danny Goodwin said.
One accident on the interstate involved a tractor-trailer and another vehicle; another accident involved a box truck and another vehicle. There also were a three-car accident and a two-car accident on the interstate, the emergency center dispatcher said. Four people were taken to hospitals, including one who was airlifted. The dispatcher said the roads were dry at the time of the accidents.
