Cleanup of debris and diesel fuel at Exit 113 from Interstates 75/64, at North Broadway in Lexington, was to keep the on- and offramps closed until 11 p.m. or midnight Wednesday, police Lt. David Marcum said.
Marcum said the scene is much worse than originally thought. After an accident involving a tractor-trailer around 2:30 p.m., police estimated a cleanup time of four to five hours.
"It is slow going. We are having a hard time with the payload the truck was carrying, and also the truck is pretty badly damaged," Marcum said.
Sgt. Pat McBride said the accident occurred when the semi's driver took Exit 113 to get off the interstate. The truck overturned on the north exit of the interstate after the driver took the corner a little too fast. The truck spilled diesel fuel and loose pellets similar to gravel.
Never miss a local story.
Firefighters had to cut the driver out of the truck. He was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital where he was treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, McBride said.
