South Limestone between the Avenue of Champions and Vine Street, the site of major reconstruction for nearly 11 months, will be open to traffic about about 3 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from Mayor Jim Newberry's office.
The work, including new sidewalks, underground utilities, new sewers, streetlights, trees and rain gardens, will be finished several weeks before July 1, its scheduled completion date.
Weather permitting, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday at the corner of Limestone and Maxwell streets.
In addition, a street party will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight June 19 to celebrate the completion of the project.
Never miss a local story.
The street will soon have new benches, identity markers, planters, trash-recycling receptacles and bicycle racks funded through a state transportation grant, the release said.
