A Corbin man died Wednesday after a three-vehicle crash on Ky. 80 in Laurel County, about 8 miles west of London.
The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. when Donald Perry, 49, of Corbin, who was operating a 2010 Chevy cargo van leased to Forcht Pharmacy of Corbin, tried to pass in a no passing zone, according to a news release from the Kentucky State Police.
The release said witnesses reported seeing the van side-swipe a 2006 Mack dump truck belonging to Haulers Inc. of London. The impact caused Perry to lose control of the van, which collided head-on with a 2006 tractor-trailer filled with coal. The tractor-trailer was owned by Buck Massey Trucking Inc. of London.
The coal truck overturned and caught fire.
Perry died in the crash.
John Massey III, the driver of the tractor-trailer filled with coal, was airlifted to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
David Adkins, 38, of London, who was driving the dump truck, was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph-London. A spokeswoman from the hospital said Adkins was released Wednesday night.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected as factors in the crash, police said.
