A pedestrian walkway on the University of Kentucky campus has been closed until further notice after an inspection found parts of the walkway unsound.
An employee from the Physical Plant Division found a rusted beam under the walkway, which spans Cooper Drive just east of the South Limestone and Cooper intersection, according to a news release from the university.
UK officials then contacted BFMJ, a Lexington structural engineering firm, and an engineer from the company inspected the walkway.
The bridge links the Garrigus Building with the Barnhart Building. It will be closed until it has been fully evaluated and repaired, the release said.
Never miss a local story.
One lane of Cooper Drive between South Limestone and University Drive will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday while inspectors complete the evaluation.
Pedestrians are being asked to cross Cooper Drive only in crosswalks at South Limestone or University Drive.
