A Lexington man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he appeared to be drunk in a supermarket while caring for a toddler, police said.
Michael Brian Jones, 57, is charged with alcohol intoxication and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Police were called about 3 a.m. to Kroger in the Tates Creek Shopping Center, where Jones and his 2-year-old grandchild were shopping. A caller told police the man was visibly intoxicated.
"He was barely functional, according to the witnesses," Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
According to a citation filed in Fayette District Court, Jones had slurred speech, smelled strongly of alcohol and staggered as he walked.
"The subject failed to exercise reasonable diligence ... to prevent a child from being neglected," the document said.
Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges in Fayette District Court on Wednesday. He was being held on a $1,000 bond, according to documents.
The child was returned to her parents, Roberts said.
