A 17-year-old senior at Bryan Station High School was arrested Tuesday afternoon for having a loaded handgun with him on campus, according to a letter about the incident that has been posted on the school's Web site.
"The student stated that he had no intention of using the weapon, but had it on his person because of a safety concern with an adult off campus," the letter states.
The student, who was not identified, was charged with possession of a weapon on school property. He will also face "serious administrative consequences through the school district," according to the letter.
The school's administration received a tip about the gun just before the end of school Tuesday and began an investigation with the help of Fayette County Public Schools Department of Law Enforcement.
The letter, signed by Bryan Station Principal Gladys Peoples, will be sent home with students Wednesday. Parents on the school's e-mail list received notification that way. Letters were not sent home with students Tuesday because the incident happened so late in the day that there was not enough time to make copies, the letter on the Web site said.
