A Lexington tanning salon was robbed at gunpoint Saturday night by a man whose description matches that in several other robberies in recent weeks, according to Lexington police.
In each one, a male suspect with what appears to be pantyhose or a mesh cloth over his face displays a silver handgun and demands cash. Police believe he then runs to a car waiting nearby and drives away.
At about 7:23 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to the Sun Tan City on Richmond Road near New Circle Road about a robbery by a masked man matching that description and method, Sgt. Mike Wright said.
About 10 businesses have been hit within the last three weeks, including two Subway restaurants, a Wendy's on New Circle Road, CorLeoni's pizza restaurant on Winchester Road and two branches of Southern Rays Tanning, one on Richmond Road and one on Southland Drive.
Lexington police still are not saying whether they believe the robberies are related.
"It has a lot of similarities," Wright said of Saturday's robbery. "Can we say at this point for sure? No."
Nobody was injured in the Sun Tan City robbery. Employees told officers the robber was a white man who appeared to be around six feet tall with "a large build," Wright said.
A helicopter circling overhead was unable to locate the robber. Police dogs tracked him to Old Todd's Road, about a block from the tanning salon, but lost the trail.
"We believe he's got a vehicle waiting somewhere in the proximity," Wright said.
Wright said officers are doing everything they can to solve the robberies, regardless of whether they are related.
"It's frustrating that you have several with this many similarities, but we're going to take one (robbery) just as serious as we'll take 10," he said.
Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call the Lexington Division of Police at (859) 258-3600.
