Jimmy Powers, a 29-year veteran of the Wilmore Fire Department, has been selected as the new chief. Powers had previously worked as fire safety officer, as a lieutenant, and as assistant chief. Former chief Jeff Anderson left to take the head position at the Morehead, Ky. Fire Department. HOWARD COMPETES IN SPELLING BEE
Drew Howard, a 6th grader at Providence Montessori School , competed in the Schripps-Howard Spelling Bee state competition in Louisville , March 7. He also competed in the National Geographic Geography Bee state competition in Bowling Green , April 3. He is the son of Laurie Sharpe and Ellis Howard of Nicholasville.
HIGH BRIDGE FESTIVAL TO AWARD TWO $500 SCHOLARSHIPS
The High Bridge Homecoming Festival will award two $500 scholarships to two Jessamine County students entering college or a technical/trade school in fall 2009. Priority will be given to those applicants who reside in the High Bridge Precinct. Applications are available from the Jessamine County school Web sites, from counselors at the high schools or by contacting 858-3895. Deadline for the applications is Thursday, April 30.
BRUMFIELD NAMED ORIENTATION LEADER
West Jessamine High School graduate and Transylvania University junior Jacob Brumfield, was named a Student Orientation Leader ( SOL ) for the 2009-10 academic year. SOLs help plan freshman orientation and help introduce new students to college life. Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership and scholarship honorary society, sponsors the SOLs. Brumfield, a business administration major, is the son of James and Janet Brumfield of Wilmore.
