Curiosity has advantages and disadvantages. The old saying tells us curiosity killed the cat. Is this true? As young children curiosity sometimes leads to trouble, danger, and excitement. As we grow older we are often told not to be curious, just to believe what some authoruty tells us. So as we age we become less and less curious; more stuck in a routine or rut; fearing to try anything new. Soon we wonder why life is boring; why we are stuck doing the same old thing day in and day out; why we no longer have any energy or excitement.
Jim Collins, a researcher and author, calls his research associates ChimpWorks, because chimps are curious. Chimps will explore what is going on around them, not always taking into account where their curiosity will lead. Collins and associates recently explored why major companies fall from greatness. These researchers discovered curiosity was often no longer valued in the company or organization, thus decline or extermination.
