My name is Elda and this is the first time I am blogging. I wanted to start this blog with some sad news of persecution of the Baha'is in Iran. The Baha'i Faith was born in Iran and ever since, the Baha'is have been severely persecuted there.
Seven members of the Friends in Iran, an ad hoc coordinating committee for the national Baha'i community, have been held in prison since may 2008. They are not facing trial on charges of "espionage for Israel, insulting [Islamic] religious sanctities, and propaganda agains the Islamic Republic.
Governments, parliamentary leaders and human rights organizations have expressed strong criticism of any such trial, with the U.S. Sate Department calling the espionage charges "baseless". Many have called for the immediate release of the Baha'is.
Never miss a local story.
Many of the Baha'is of Lexington have written to their representative about it, asking that they support the H. Resolution 175, condemning the government of Iran "for its state sponsored persecution of its baha'i minority and its continued violation of the International covenants on Human Rights." This resoluation was introduced on Feb 13. If passed, it would be the 11th resolution by Congress deploring this persecution since 1982.
Two Baha'i families in Lexington are here because of the continued persecution they faced as Baha'is in Iran. I hope to post here a few of their stories for you along with news of the trial.
Until then, God bless you and thanks for reading.
