This year, on August 15th, my mother, God willing, turns 81. I worry a lot about my mother as she continues to try to do the things that she did long ago, i.e. clean our entire house from top to bottom. Though my mother is in good health (thank God), she suffers from bad knees and dizziness.
Whenever I hear from her that she is cleaning the house or moving objects, I always comment to her, that she needs to "relax and rest." Her reply nine times out of time is: "Jimmy, hard work never killed anyone!"
If the Catholic, the Christian is really going to invest in these forty days of Lent, then we have some hard work to do! Lent is a time, provided by the Church to make ourselves ready for the Lord.
Commonly, the Season of Lent is seen as a time of repentance and renewal. However for me, Lent is a time of SECOND CHANCES. And what is interesting about second chances, are that they don't necessarily appear when or how we expect them to. But then again, God doesn't always enter into our lives when or how we want him to either.
During this Season of Lent, God's Spirit calls out to us, imploring us: WAKE UP! Each of us have another chance. SEIZE IT. To paraphrase Isaiah: "Level the mountains and fill in the valleys. Make what is crooked straight."
Lent is the time of "I'm sorry. Let's talk."
Lent is the time of "Where did I go wrong?" and "How can I make this right?"
Lent is the time of "I'm addicted and I need help."
Lent is the time of "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned...."
Lent is the time of slammed doors being re-opened....the phone being picked up...the fences being mended...the wounds being healed.
Lent is a time of second chances in resolving to live differently. Resolving to make room for GOD!
It is my believe that sometime this very day, as your read this BLOG the opportunity for a second chance will come your way -- take hold of it -- it may be difficult, it may be hard, but remember what Momma Marie says: "Hard work never killed anyone!"
