A duplex near St. Joseph Hospital caught fire Tuesday night, leaving one of the units with smoke and water damage throughout.
The fire at 361 Mockingbird Lane started outside the home on a breezeway that connects the two units, said Battalion Chief Randy Gilliam. He said the fire, which was reported at 7 p.m., spread up the soffit and into the attic.
Firefighters put the blaze out quickly, he said, adding that there was no damage to the back unit.
Jason Duncan, who lives in the part of the home that was damaged, said he was inside when the fire broke out. He said he smelled smoke and found the fire; a neighbor called 911.
Gilliam said the cause of the blaze was under investigation Tuesday night.
