Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul has a slight lead over Secretary of State Trey Grayson in their race to win next May’s Republican primary election for the U.S. Senate, according to a new poll.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo holds a double-digit lead over Attorney General Jack Conway to be the Democratic nominee in the U.S. Senate contest, the poll said.
The WHAS11/Survey USA poll, released Tuesday night by the Louisville television station, showed Paul leading Grayson 35 percent to 32 percent. Paul is the son of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, who ran an unsuccessful but spirited campaign for president last year.
The latest poll has a 4.1 percent margin of error. It shows Grayson down 5 percentage points from its last poll 11 weeks ago and Paul up 9 percentage points.
Mongiardo leads Conway in the poll, 39 percent to 28 percent. Mongiardo also showed 39 percent in the last poll, but Conway is slightly down.
The poll also showed that a third of the likely voters in each primary don’t back any of the four major candidates.
