Steve Nunn indicted in Hart County

- bestep@herald-leader.com

Former state Rep. Steve Nunn, facing a murder charge in the shooting of his former fiancée in Lexington, has been indicted in Hart County on six counts of wanton endangerment.

A grand jury returned the indictment this week, charging that Nunn fired a gun near six police officers on Sept. 11, hours after Nunn's former fiancée, Amanda Ross, was killed outside her Lexington townhouse.

Police had been looking for Nunn to question him because Ross had gotten an emergency protection order against Nunn after alleging that he had hit her. They found Nunn sitting against a headstone, his wrists cut, at the rural cemetery where his parents, former Gov. Louie B. Nunn and Beula Nunn, are buried.

Nunn allegedly fired a shot after police saw him, then threw down the gun. Police have said Nunn did not point the gun directly at them, but the indictment is an allegation that he endangered others by firing the shot.
