Harrison police investigate rough-terrain vehicle crash

The Harrison County sheriff's department is investigating a rough-terrain vehicle crash that hospitalized three teenagers and tied up traffic on a state road for two hours.

Brian Carroll, 14, was the driver of an RTV that had pulled onto the shoulder of U.S. 62 between Cynthiana and Georgetown about 4:24 p.m. Monday, Harrison County Deputy Sheriff Richard Hutchison said.

Kyle Martin, 15, and Austin Wade, 16, were passengers. The three had just mowed the yard of a woman who lives near the road; Brian missed his turn-off and pulled over, Hutchison said. Brian then made a U-turn on the highway and collided with a truck driven by Ronald Hinton of Carlisle.

The three teenagers were thrown from the RTV. They weren't wearing seat belts, Hutchison said.

Brian and Kyle were taken by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Hospital. Austin was taken to Harrison Memorial Hospital and was then transferred to UK.

Brian and Kyle were in good condition Tuesday night, and Austin had been discharged.

Hutchison said he will speak to the county attorney to determine whether to press charges.

"They shouldn't have been anywhere close to the highway with that thing," he said.
