Powell inmate back in jail after second escape

- aclark@herald-leader.com

A Powell County inmate who escaped from a hospital last week turned himself into the Estill County jail Thursday.

Ethan Shane Newman, 19, had been transported from Powell County jail to Marcum & Wallace Memorial Hospital in Irvine on July 30 for treatment of an unknown injury. Police say Newman broke free from a deputy jailer at the hospital.

Newman surrendered at the Estill County jail about 11:50 p.m. Thursday, Kentucky State Police said. He was arrested and charged with second-degree escape.

Officers say this is the second time Newman has escaped from police custody. In June, Newman escaped from the Estill County Courthouse in Irvine, where he was to appear for a hearing, state police said. He was captured a short time later.
